This lap blanket is constructed with over 50 separate pieces of scrap yarn to create a slow gradient from ocean surface to sea floor. What would have been considered unusable waste fiber has been transformed into a work of art made to bring comfort and warmth. Surrounded by tumultuous waves, a blue whale plunges into the depths of the calm sea below. This handcrafted motif inspires the inner peace these massive, majestic creatures must feel wandering through the deep blue.
Whale populations were nearly decimated from commercial whaling, and were beginning to recover and stabilize when they once again struggled. Like much of anything that lives on land and sea, the status of the blue whale is being put at risk by global warming. Overfishing, underwater noise, ship collisions, habitat loss, and pollution all threaten to decimate this creature. Here, I have created something that imagines what it would mean to be a blue whale free of all these dangers.
Care instructions: hand wash and let air dry. Materials are 100% acrylic. Do not expose to excessive heat.
