AJ Courtney- Hydrangeas in Bloom

Hydrangea is derived from the Greek "water vessel", referring to the flower's cup shaped seed capsules. They are commonly seen as a vain and showy flower. Their blooms are entirely dependent on the ground they grow from. A slight shift in acidity in their soil can produce drastically different colors, ranging from raging pinks to moody indigos. We, like hydrangeas, are shaped by our environments. And in a world where the ground beneath our feet seems to change every day, we cannot help but show the ways it has changed us. 

Blue hydrangeas are believed to represent understanding. They indicate sorrow, apologies, and regret. I created these hydrangeas to show how brilliantly our sorrow blooms, and how there is wonder - not vanity- in showing how the world has made you what you are.
