Annabel Schoen- Elephant Herd (Print)

This piece is a family herd of African elephants moving together, in loose washes of ink that let the animals blur into one another as they move. Herds are led by a matriarch, usually the oldest and most experienced female, who carries decades of memory about where to find water and safe ground, especially during drought. The bonds within a herd run deep: elephants are known to grieve their dead, revisit the bones of family members, and stay close to injured or distressed relatives rather than leave them behind. They are my favourite animals.

The original is drawn in ink on watercolor paper.
