Annabel Schoen- The Mighty Wildebeest Migration (Original)

Inspired by my time in the bush in Tanzania and South Africa, this piece captures a moment from the Great Migration - a herd of wildebeest descending a riverbank in the Serengeti, pushing towards the next crossing. I worked entirely in ink wash to let the animals emerge from layered washes of grey and black.

Each year, over a million wildebeest (joined by hundreds of thousands of zebras) travel roughly 500-1,000 miles in a continuous loop through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. The journey is one of the last great intact large-mammal migrations left on Earth: a reminder of how much is still worth protecting.
