This piece was drawn during time I spent doing research at a rhino conservation reserve in Limpopo, South Africa. The calf pictured, Geronimo, was only a few weeks old when I was on the reserve. White rhinos are the more social of the two African rhino species (the other being black rhinos), often found in small family groups called crashes, and calves like this one stay near their mothers for two to three years before going out on their own.
The original is drawn in ballpoint pen on watercolor paper.
The proceedings will be donated to Dr. Katherine Gura’s fund, who is working on Great Grey owl conservation and research in the Tetons in Jackson, Wyoming. To learn more visit https://give.colostate.edu/
