California Condor (Gymnogyps californianus)
The California Condor is one of the rarest birds in North America and a powerful symbol of both nature's fragility and its resilience. In this portrait, I wanted to create a quiet encounter through its direct gaze. Rather than simply observing the bird, the viewer is invited to feel that the condor is looking back, transforming a portrait into a shared moment of connection.

The vibrant apple-green background creates a bold contrast with the condor's dark feathers and expressive face. Colour is an essential part of my artistic language. It draws the viewer in, celebrates the beauty of wildlife, and brings joy and energy into spaces that often feel neutral and colourless.

I chose the California Condor for The Art of Conservation because it reminds us that conservation can succeed when people choose to act. In 1987, only 27 California Condors remained alive, and the species survived only because of an ambitious captive breeding and reintroduction programme. Today, hundreds of condors once again soar across parts of California, Arizona, Utah, and Baja California. Their recovery is a powerful example of what can be achieved through long-term commitment, collaboration, and hope.
The California Condor is still classified as Critically Endangered. Although its population continues to grow, it remains threatened by lead poisoning from ammunition, habitat loss, and collisions with power lines, making ongoing conservation efforts essential.
