Short Crested Coquette (Lophornis brachylophus)

The Short Crested Coquette may be tiny, but its presence is unforgettable. Perched quietly on a branch, it looks directly at the viewer, inviting a peaceful moment of connection. I wanted this composition to capture both its delicacy and its quiet confidence.
The vibrant yellow background fills the painting with warmth and energy while drawing attention to the bird's intricate plumage. Bright colours are central to my artistic language. They celebrate the joy of nature while bringing light and optimism into everyday living spaces.

I selected the Short Crested Coquette because it is one of the threatened bird species I have painted. Restricted to a very small range in the Sierra de Atoyac of Guerrero, Mexico, the Short Crested Coquette is threatened primarily by habitat loss and degradation caused by deforestation and land-use change. It reminds us that even the smallest creatures can carry immense ecological value. My hope is that this portrait encourages viewers to pause, appreciate its beauty, and remember that protecting biodiversity begins by caring about the individual lives that make it so extraordinary.
