“No water, no life. No blue, no green” - Sylvia Earle
This year for my work, I have decided to add in a little cultural value in her. Her form is a bowl with raw unrefined outer texture. Bowl in Chinese culture has different symbolic roles. But as bowls are round and are used during mealtime, they signify harmonious unity, continuity in life and a holding space for good thriving energy (especially the water element).
Hence, my bowl represents the tireless continuation of conservation from people all across the globe; using their own experiences and skills to create awareness; to be the voice of the voiceless. The starfishes that are making their way into the bowl represent the thriving energy of life and adaptability. The intentional cracks and unrefined outer bowl represent the perfect imperfections throughout this journey. Just like yin and yang, there must always be balance, the imperfections will allow us to be grateful and appreciate the vibrant beauty in different perspectives.
I hope that this bowl will be a vessel that reminds you that life starts within and may the holding space of this bowl bring abundance of light and peace to your heart.
