Laura Short- The Canada Warbler

The Canada Warbler is currently a species of high conservation concern, profoundly vulnerable to habitat loss across their entire life cycle. Over 90% of their primary mountain wintering forests have been cleared for agriculture and livestock farming, while their Canadian breeding grounds face ongoing fragmentation from logging, urban development, and the draining of wet forests.

I created this piece with my parents in mind. Growing up, they always had a thick green bird book around the house. On family camping trips and walks, they would constantly quiz us to see if we could remember a bird's name or identify the song being sung. When I was researching this piece and discovered that the Canada Warbler was endangered, it brought me right back to those cherished family memories.

Warblers are a tiny, diverse species that come in so many stunning varieties. The striking presence of these birds, along with the deep contrast in their feathers, is an image I will always remember. Through thick textures, layered paint, and a bright contrast between the dark backdrop and the birds' vivid yellow plumage, this piece is designed to celebrate their beauty while serving as a visual reminder of the delicate ecosystems they rely on to survive.
