Madison Varney- Bog Hoverfly - Eristalis cryptarum

This piece highlights the Bog Hoverfly, Eristalis cryptarum. Once found across the south of the UK, it is now found in just a handful of sites in Dartmoor and Devon. This is a concern as is, but in other European countries, this species is endangered or extinct! I find myself drawn to hoverflies. Their flight patterns, huge composite eyes, striking colours and ability to trick the untrained eye into suspecting a very fast, well maneuvered wasp, gives them such personality to me. Seeing them flock to flowers in the sun fills me with such nostalgia and joy. To think that such a beautiful example of a hoverfly could disappear from my country for good, moved me to create this piece. The Buglife charity is running multiple projects on bogs in the UK that could help out these little aviation masters, and funds generated from this piece will go directly into their projects and maybe even a specific bog centered project!
