This piece was made specifically for the Art of Conservation show, and is inspired by the work of Point Blue Conservation Science, a California-based environmental non-profit with a mission to conserve birds, wildlife, and ecosystems through science, partnerships, and outreach. They have stewarded the fragile marine ecosystems of the Farallon Islands National Wildlife Refuge for almost 60 years, and their scientists monitor humpback whale migration and feeding patterns around the Farallon Islands and the Golden Gate. Their data has been directly used to adjust the physical locations of commercial shipping lanes and implement Vessel Speed Reductions (VSR), reducing the number of fatal ship strikes on humpback and blue whales by 50%.

This stoneware humpback whale scoop was thrown on the wheel, sculpted, then hand painted with glaze. The stoneware jar was hand sketched, then painted with glaze. The whale can leap into a breached position, or rest across the jar.

Food-safe USA-made glazes.
Microwave and oven safe.
Hand washing recommended.
