Mischief presents a red fox seated in quiet stillness, its body turned slightly while its gaze
meets the viewer directly. The fox is rendered with careful realism—its dense winter coat
shifting from deep rust to soft cream, its fur catching subtle variations of light. Set against a cool, snow-covered ground, the figure feels both grounded and alert, poised between rest and awareness. As with all of my life-size animal paintings, the fox returns the viewer’s gaze, not to confront but to engage—shifting the viewer from a passive observer to an active participant in the exchange.

Behind the fox, the ecological pattern unfolds as a rich, repeating field of interwoven forms. Deep greens and earthen reds create a dense visual tapestry of beaked hazelnut leaves, moths, and birds, layered in a way that suggests both camouflage and complexity. The pattern does not describe a literal space but instead operates as a symbolic environment—one that reflects the relationships and dependencies that sustain the fox’s existence.

The contrast between the highly detailed animal and the flattened, rhythmic background
creates a tension between observation and interpretation. The fox emerges from the pattern, yet remains inseparable from it, visually reinforcing its role within a broader ecological system.
