Natalie Rose- Condor

California Condors were nearly extinct. In 1982, just 22 could be counted. At that
time, US Fish and Wildlife began a recovery program that involved capturing all the
birds and breeding them in captivity. Eventually this led to the population increasing
and now they can count over 600 birds both free and in captivity. In June of this year,
2026, the first free flying Condor was seen in Oregon. There had not been a sighting
since 1904. One of the main killers of Condors is lead poisoning. The Condor is a
scavenger, cleaning the forest by eating carrion, but they often eat lead bullets
leading to poisoning. This can be stopped by not using lead bullets.
The artwork was inspired by and incorporates the original vintage postal stamp. The
image started with a drawing of a condor. (I believe made this generally ugly animal
look very cute!) I painted the drawing digitally, printed it, and photo transferred it onto
art paper that I marbleized with inks. I used gouache paints, other prints, photos,
stencils, and postal photo transfers to create the finished collage.
