Northern Flickers are often heard before they are seen, their distinctive drumming echoing through neighbourhoods each spring. Unlike most woodpeckers, the flicker spends much of its time on the ground, foraging for ants and beetles rather than drilling into bark. The red-shafted subspecies is found across BC, the Pacific states, and into the Rockies and is recognizable in flight by the salmon-red flash of colour under its wings and tail.

One season, we had a Northern Flicker take up residence near us and heard its tap-tapping each morning on our roof, calling for a mate. My kids named him Pecky, and he visited us daily until he found his true love. This mug is my tribute to our musical little neighbour. The exterior is finished in soft crystalline greens inspired by moss, lichens, and the forests of the Pacific Northwest, with a satin white interior. Capacity approx. 10 oz

This piece is a reminder that some of the most remarkable wildlife lives just outside our windows. It is microwave and dishwasher safe, and careful handling is recommended to protect your new friend.
